Bismillahirrahmanirrahim...
The first day in my life that I've decided to involve in blog world. First and foremost, my greeting to all of the wonderful readers who are currently reading this piece of noob post. Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, fellas! :D
To get started, I am just a typical girl from a not-so-famous region. I'm not any well-known person so I guess that's all that matters. :)
LIFE AS A MUSLIMAH - FREE OR OPPRESSED?
It is a common thing to hear people say that girls wearing a head scarf on their head is not of their own will, in other words, they are forced to do so. How amazing Quran is, it comes up with a verse answering this statement since 1400 years ago.
"There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing."
[Quran, 2:256]
Dear readers, being a Muslimah, wearing hijab is very synonym for females in Islamic teaching and it is a sign of modesty and chastity for the pearls of the deen. I've encountered people saying we are not "free" because this faith stops us from being who we really are, as in exposing ourselves (skin, hair, etc...) Ironically, majority of the people who claim statements as such are people who have never experienced wearing hijab even at one point in their life... which I find is so amusing.
Now let's talk a bit on the feminists and let's be neutral - do not let our shallow mind swallow our sanity in seeing things in a bigger picture. Why do you think feminism exists and for what? According to Wikipedia, feminism is a range of movements and ideologies that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist advocates or supports the rights and equality of women.
If that's the case, then I must also embrace the title of "feminist" to myself as well, right? For I uphold the rights of women and demand a good position in the society without being double-standardized for my gender as a female. But, the question pops into my mind, what kind of equality that the feminists stand for? Of course the initial intention of the feminists is to make sure that they're not discriminated by the societal stereotype, nonetheless, the meaning of equality that they're fighting for seems to be altered these days.
Do you think God made us differently to be similar? Equality doesn't make something justified and fair. I give you an instance. a rich and a poor will receive some amount of money from the government. They're humans, correct. These two man are males, correct. They have different necessity in life, correct. Do you think it is justice to give them equal amount of money, just because they are similar in certain things? THINK. Even physically, we are born male and female. That being said, I agree that we should get no double standard but I believe the differences are what make us stronger and if we focus on what we are good at, we can be better than the best. I mean showing the chest is fine just because the men can do so? I was like, ^@(%(*@%()& !
Okay, enough with the feminists. I wouldn't argue much, I'm sure you can decide of what's best for you.
Back to the topic, HIJAB. So are we oppressed for covering our skin and hair? If you look into other abrahamic religions such as Christianity and Judaism, their books also command them to cover the hair.
New International Version in the Bible:
"For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head."
(Corinthians, 11:6)
The Torah commands the Kohein to take various steps to demonstrate that the sotah has deviated from the modest and loyal path of most married Jewish women (Rashi 5:15-27)
So why is it an oppression only when it comes to Islam? PROPAGANDA. In Malay, it is Propa Berganda-Ganda (lel :v ) Feminists claim that we should be equal in exposing parts of our body with the men. It is a women right to be free to choose what to wear and what do we want to do. I can say I am a feminist for standing with my sisters in hijab who have faced struggles just to stay in the faith with their identity as a hijabi and a muslim. It is FREEDOM righttt? Being naked is not freedom, it is withdrawing to the past where uncivilized creatures lived nakedly and "freely".
After all, just know that I do not speak for your mind and I only wish that this world can be a better place to live in harmony and love. We have enough hate already, and I hope it is not too late to spread the love. If you're a muslim girl with proper hijab, just know that you are never alone, stay strong and stay patient - Rejoice. On the other hand, if you aren't, I respect you and I live with amazing people, multicultural and interfaith friends so I know you are awesome for showing some support to us when the dark side of this world is against unity and peace.
I guess that's all for now. Do follow. Stay blessed everyone. Salaam. ^_^

Do I look oppressed to you? :)
